Why it matters
Sizes — this matters more than it sounds
Poodle (Standard)s come in more than one recognised size. AKC recognises Toy, Miniature and Standard Poodles as varieties of one breed.
| Toy 10 in and under | 4–6 lb Under 10 inches |
| Miniature 10–15 in | 10–15 lb Over 10 and up to 15 inches |
| Standard over 15 in | 40–70 lb Over 15 inches |
How to know which you have: For a registered dog the paperwork states the variety. Otherwise measure height at the withers — these varieties are defined by height, and weight follows from it.
Why it matters: Every feeding amount, gear size and crate recommendation in Rosette is calculated from the weight you enter, so the varieties get genuinely different guidance.
The honest caveat: Breeders do not agree on these labels. Some call anything under a Standard a 'Mini'. Others split it into Petite, Micro and Toy. Ask for the PARENTS' adult weights and heights — that is a fact, where the label is a marketing choice. And no breeder can guarantee an adult size; an honest one gives you a range and says so.
What this is
What they’re great at
✓ A natural with children - famously patient
✓ Quick study - learns in a handful of reps
✓ Forgiving of first-timer mistakes
✓ Adapts beautifully to smaller spaces

Honest challenges
Alone time is genuinely hard
Bred to work or live beside a human all day - solitude was never in the job description.
What helps: ['Train it like a skill: the Alone-Time guide builds tolerance in micro-doses from day one', 'The frozen-KONG-only-when-you-leave ritual turns departures into jackpots', "Cover long days honestly: a midday walker, daycare 2-3x a week, and a camera to know (not guess) how they're doing"]

Needs a real outlet, rain or shine
Moderate-high drive doesn't take days off.
What helps: ['Build the outlet into the routine: Obedience and agility elite', 'Brain work counts double on bad-weather days - see Training School', 'A flirt pole in the yard delivers a workout in ten minutes']

What you can do
Exercise & training
Exercise: High (Standard: 1-2 hrs) to moderate (Toy/Mini)
Training profile — Versatile working type: Working breeds without work self-employ - as tax auditors of your belongings. Twenty minutes of training tires them more than an hour of fetch.
Sports and outlets that suit them: Obedience and agility elite · Dock diving · Hunt tests (yes, really - they were duck dogs)
What you can do
Grooming & coat
Grooming: Very high - professional grooming every 4-6 weeks plus regular brushing to prevent mats.
Shedding: Minimal - curly coat traps shed hair (popular for allergy-sensitive homes).

Health to know about
Standard: bloat, Addison's, sebaceous adenitis, hip dysplasia. Mini/Toy: patellar luxation, PRA, dental disease, Legg-Calve-Perthes
Breed-typical tendencies, not a diagnosis. Individual dogs vary enormously — your veterinarian screens for what matters for your dog.
