Why it matters

Sizes — this matters more than it sounds

American Eskimo Dogs come in more than one recognised size. AKC recognises Toy, Miniature and Standard as varieties of one breed.
Toy
9–12 in
5–10 lb
Smallest variety
Miniature
12–15 in
10–20 lb
The most common pet size
Standard
15–20 in
15–40 lb

How to know which you have: For a registered dog the paperwork states the variety. Otherwise measure height at the withers — these varieties are defined by height, and weight follows from it.
Why it matters: Every feeding amount, gear size and crate recommendation in Rosette is calculated from the weight you enter, so the varieties get genuinely different guidance.
The honest caveat: Breeders do not agree on these labels. Some call anything under a Standard a 'Mini'. Others split it into Petite, Micro and Toy. Ask for the PARENTS' adult weights and heights — that is a fact, where the label is a marketing choice. And no breeder can guarantee an adult size; an honest one gives you a range and says so.

Honest challenges

Needs a real outlet, rain or shine
Moderate-high drive doesn't take days off.

What helps: ['Build the outlet into the routine: Trick titles (circus heritage)', 'Brain work counts double on bad-weather days - see Training School', 'A flirt pole in the yard delivers a workout in ten minutes']
The fur is a lifestyle
Heavy-shedding coat with seasonal blowouts.

What helps: ['The weekly rake routine in the Grooming Kit halves it', 'Robot vacuum on daily patrol (see Home Setup)', 'A professional deshed blowout during coat-blow weeks saves the house']
Vocal by design
Alert heritage - announcing things IS the historic job.

What helps: ['Thank-and-redirect: acknowledge the alert, cue quiet, pay the quiet', 'Manage triggers: window film and white noise beat willpower', 'Exercise first - a tired alarm system fires less. Never bark collars']
Prey drive is hardwired
Small fast animals flip an ancient switch - this is wiring, not disobedience.

What helps: ['Management IS the training: never unsupervised with small pets, period', 'Secure fencing plus leash or long line outdoors for life', 'Feed the drive legally: flirt pole and lure-chase games']
What you can do

Exercise & training

Exercise: Moderate-high - 1 hr/day plus mental work
Training profile — Northern / spitz / sled type: Independent problem-solvers bred to run and decide. Exercise in heat is dangerous - dawn/dusk in summer. A tired spitz is the only good-behaving spitz.
Sports and outlets that suit them: Trick titles (circus heritage) · Agility
What you can do

Grooming & coat

Grooming: Moderate-high - brushing 2-3x weekly.
Shedding: Heavy.

Know your ER

Heat stroke
Loud/frantic breathing, brick-red or blue gums, wobbliness, collapse, vomiting in heat
Move to AC, wet with cool (not ice) water especially belly/paws, fan, and drive to ER with windows down/AC on - even if the dog seems to recover
