What: A mosquito-borne worm that matures in the heart and lungs. One infected mosquito bite is the whole transmission story - indoor dogs get it too.

The asymmetry: Prevention is a monthly chew or an injection and costs modest money. TREATMENT is a series of painful deep-muscle injections, weeks of strict crate rest, real risk of complications, and many times the cost - and damage already done to the heart and lungs doesn't fully undo. This is the single most lopsided cost-benefit decision in routine dog care.

How: Year-round in most of the U.S. (mosquitoes don't respect calendars, and gaps are how infections happen), with an annual blood test - most preventives require a negative test first because giving preventive to an infected dog can be dangerous.

Regional note: Warm, humid regions (the Gulf South, Texas, the Southeast) carry the highest burden - but heartworm has been diagnosed in all 50 states.

What: Fleas cause allergic dermatitis (the #1 skin allergy in dogs) and carry tapeworm; ticks transmit Lyme, ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

How: Monthly topicals, oral chews, or long-acting collars - your vet matches the product to your region, your dog's health, and whether there are cats or kids in the house.

Honest notes: · Treat every pet in the home or the cycle restarts
· Environment matters: eggs and larvae live in carpet and bedding, so a flea problem is a house problem
· Check for ticks after every hike - the daily coat check in the camping section exists for this
· Never use a dog product on a cat (permethrin is toxic to cats) and never split large-dog doses

What: Roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, tapeworms - puppies are often born with or nurse in roundworms, which is why puppy deworming is routine, not a sign something went wrong.

Zoonotic note: Several of these can infect PEOPLE, especially children - which is why yard pickup and handwashing are health measures, not just tidiness.

How: Puppy deworming schedule per your vet, then annual (or twice-yearly) fecal exams. Many monthly heartworm preventives also cover common intestinal worms - ask which your product includes.

Giardia: A protozoan from contaminated water - the classic 'drank from the puddle/creek' cause of soft, greasy, foul stool. Treatable; prevention is not letting them drink standing water (see the camping water kit).
