Stress escalates in a predictable order: look away, lip lick, yawn, turn the head, turn the body, walk away, freeze, stiffen, growl, snap, bite. A dog who has learned that the early signals get ignored — or that growling gets punished — simply starts higher up the ladder. That is where ‘no warning’ bites come from.

· Lip licking when there is no food
· Yawning when they are not tired
· Whale eye — the whites showing as they look sideways without turning their head
· Turning the head or body away
· Shaking off when they are not wet
· A raised front paw
· Scratching or sniffing suddenly and out of context

03The commonly misread ones · 5 points›

A wagging tail: Wagging means arousal, not friendliness. A high, stiff, fast wag is a very different dog from a low loose sweep.

The guilty look: That is appeasement, not guilt. It is a response to your face and tone, not to the shredded cushion.

A dog who freezes: Stillness before a bite is the most commonly missed signal there is. A frozen dog is not calm.

Showing the belly: Sometimes an invitation, sometimes appeasement, sometimes 'please stop'. Context decides, not the position.

Smiling: Lips pulled back with a tense face is not a smile. A loose open mouth with soft eyes is.

04Never punish a growl · 1 point›

A growl is information, freely given. Punish it and you do not remove the feeling, you remove the warning — and the next dog gives you nothing before the snap. Thank the growl, work out what caused it, and change that.

05What relaxed looks like · 1 point›

Loose body, weight evenly distributed, soft blinking eyes, ears in neutral, mouth open and slack, tail at natural height with a loose sweep. Learn this one first — everything else is a departure from it.

06The practice · 1 point›

Film your dog for two minutes on your phone in a normal situation and watch it with the sound off. You will see things in slow motion that you miss in real time. Do it once a week for a month and you will never stop seeing them.
