Roughly three to sixteen weeks, with the most sensitive part from about three to twelve. During it, novelty is absorbed as normal. After it, novelty is assessed as a possible threat. This is why a puppy who met wheelchairs, beards, umbrellas and stairs before sixteen weeks is usually relaxed about them forever.

Puppies are not fully vaccinated until well after the window closes, which creates a genuine dilemma. The position of the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior is that the behavioral risk of under-socialization outweighs the infectious risk when sensible precautions are taken — because behavioral problems, not infectious disease, are the leading cause of death in dogs under three.

What a good one looks like: · Small — six puppies or fewer
· Requires proof of first vaccinations
· Rewards-based only, with no aversive tools present at all
· Includes handling practice, not just sit and down
· Lets you observe a class before enrolling

Red flag: Any class where a prong, shock or choke collar appears. Those work through pain or fear, the behavioral fallout is documented, and we recommend rewards-based training only — so walk out. The same goes for a class where puppies are allowed to be overwhelmed by rough play while an instructor calls it socialization; a frightened puppy is learning that other dogs are frightening.

This is the most common misunderstanding. The checklist is surfaces, sounds, people and handling — wheelchairs, hats, beards, children, vacuum cleaners, car rides, grooming, nail clippers, vet tables, stairs, grates, wet grass. Meeting a hundred dogs and no umbrellas is a half-done job.

An adult or adolescent dog can absolutely still learn, it just takes longer and needs more care about distance and pace. This is what counter-conditioning and desensitization are for, and it works. A rescue with an unknown start is not a lost cause — they are just on a different timeline.
