Name a guardian, write it down, and tell them. A short written instruction — who takes the dog, what they eat, which vet — removes the single biggest fear, and it costs nothing. A pet trust is the formal version and is recognized in every US state; an attorney can set one up and it can hold funds for the dog's care.

· An adult or senior dog is often the better match than a puppy — known temperament, lower energy, already house-trained, and a shorter horizon that some people find reassuring rather than sad
· Size you can physically manage on a bad day, not a good one
· Low-shedding or low-grooming coats if reaching and standing are hard
· Some shelters run senior-to-senior programs with reduced or waived fees

Ask about pet policy BEFORE choosing a facility — many now allow dogs, with weight limits and a care plan, and the ones that do tend to advertise it poorly. If a move genuinely cannot include the dog, a rehoming arranged by you while you can still choose the home is much easier on everyone than one arranged under pressure later.
