Grooming tools

Slicker brush: Fine bent wires on a flat pad - the general-purpose detangler for medium and long coats. Light pressure only; pressing hard causes 'brush burn' on skin.

Undercoat rake: Long widely-spaced teeth that reach through the topcoat to pull dead undercoat. The essential tool for double coats - and the reason a Husky's shed is manageable at all.

Pin brush: Rounded pins for long, silky coats - finishing, not detangling.

Bristle brush: For short coats - distributes oils and removes loose hair.

Deshedding tool: Blade-style tools remove a lot of undercoat fast, but over-use cuts the topcoat. Use sparingly, never on a matted coat.

Dematting tool or comb: A hooked blade that cuts through mats. Use with the mat lifted away from skin - and know when to stop: a badly matted coat is a groomer's job, and a short 'restart' clip is kindness, not failure.

Greyhound comb: The honesty tool - if the comb won't pass to the skin, the coat isn't brushed, no matter how it looks.

Nail grinder vs clipper: Grinders take small amounts and are hard to over-cut with; clippers are faster but less forgiving. Either works - the one you'll actually use is the right one.

Styptic powder: Stops bleeding if you hit the quick. Buy it BEFORE you need it; it belongs in every grooming kit.

Curved scissors and sanitary trim: Rounded-tip scissors for feet, sanitary areas, and around eyes - blunt tips exist because dogs move.

The quick: The blood vessel and nerve inside the nail. On white nails it's the pink part; on black nails, trim small slices until you see a chalky-gray oval on the cut face - stop there. Frequent small trims make the quick recede over time.

Line brushing: Parting the coat and brushing from the skin outward in horizontal lines - the only way to actually brush a thick or curly coat. Surface brushing is how matting hides.

Coat blow: The seasonal mass shed of a double coat, usually spring and fall - weeks of astonishing volume. Rake daily through it; it ends.

Why not to shave a double coat: The double coat insulates against heat as well as cold and protects from sun. Shaving can permanently damage regrowth. Deshed instead - unless a vet or groomer advises otherwise for a medical reason.
